The New York City Subway has been in operation for 121 years; there are 22+ subway lines and 472 subway stations with 5.5 million daily riders! The numbers are CRAZY but what happens inside those subway stations, and how each one of those individuals interacts with the subway, is equally or even more fascinating to me. For my individual Project, I am exploring how subways make for “public space,” categorizing the subway environment according to different themes, such as, food, location, music, architecture, performance, interaction, humanity, and more. My final product will be a collection of short non-fiction pieces placed on a website I am building to capture my personal stories and encounters on the subway, as well as a short documentary inspired by The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces by William H. Whyte.
